Second -phase UP elections end

The second phase of Union Parishad (UP) polls ended at 4pm on Thursday amid sporadic incidents of clash leaving at least seven dead.

Voting to 835 UPs across the country began at 8:00am amid tight security. Election to 20 UPs were held through EVMs while the rest through traditional ballot papers.

A total 1.65 crore voters were scheduled to vote at 8,492 polling centres to choose their local government representative.

 

Nearly 1,000 AL rebel candidates contested the polls in the second phase elections, party sources said.

A total of 41,218 candidates took part in electoral race. Of them, 3,310 vied for chairman posts, 28,747 for member posts and 9,161 for women reserve seats.

A total of 81 candidates nominated by the ruling Awami League stand elected unopposed for chairman posts in the second phase of UP polls.

Meanwhile, 73 candidates for women reserve seats and 203 member candidates are also elected unopposed.

According to EC sources, law enforcers were deployed in and around the polling areas.

In the first phase, elections to 204 UPs were held on June 21 and 160 UPs on September 20.
